What is your experience with experience? 

When I finally made it into management my experiences came in handy but not in the way that I had imagined. 🤔

It didn’t seem to matter much. 😥 Although I thought I knew everything, I had to learn that I only knew what I knew. There was much more that I didn’t and still don’t know. 😐

To make your experience count, you need to mine its nuggets and turn them into stepping stones to build a solid foundation for lasting success. 😅

When we are interviewing for a new exciting role the level of our experience matters. We can draw from numerous examples to demonstrate to the recruiter that we are the right person for the job. Our experience gives us confidence and helps us combat self-doubt. All we need to do is to look at a list of our accomplishments and we feel a lot less like an imposter. (It works, try it when you feel like one.)

When I was in my twenties, I heard that you need to be 25 years old with 20 years of experience to be considered for specific roles. So, I went out to gain as much experience as I could. Doing boring administration jobs, taking minutes, organising conferences, and observing the big bosses doing their high-profile jobs, and eventually taken over some of their tasks. When I finally made it into management my experiences came in handy but not in a way that I had imagined. 

That is exactly why many highly experienced professionals are often bypassed when opportunities come their way. Instead of giving them the job, younger people with lot less experience are chosen. There are a few reasons why that may be the case, higher qualifications, better communication skills, cute upwards management skills, stronger network, and a few more. And as it appears, experience is often not a determining factor at all. Why is that?
